Is It Your Throttle Body?
A vacuum leak, a dirty MAF sensor or a sticking EGR valve can cause the same symptoms. See our throttle body guide for the full list of symptoms and causes.
Petrol and Diesel Throttle Bodies
| Engine | What the throttle body does |
|---|---|
| Petrol | Controls how much air enters the engine as you press the accelerator, and controls idle speed. |
| Diesel | Mostly stays open while driving. It helps the EGR system and closes when you switch off to stop the engine shuddering. A failed one can still cause limp mode, EGR faults and a shudder at shut-down. |
How to Choose the Right Throttle Body
- Pick your make from the list above, then your model, engine and year.
- Match the OE number on your old throttle body's label, for example 03L128063T (VW Group 2.0 TDI) or 1450A033 (Mitsubishi L200).
- Match the pin count. Count the terminals in the plug (for example 4, 5 or 6 pins). The new throttle body must fit your wiring plug.
- Check petrol or diesel. The same model often uses different throttle bodies for petrol and diesel engines.
- Not sure? Send our team your registration or VIN, or a photo of the label, for a free fitment check.

Throttle Body FAQs
Do I need to relearn a new throttle body?
Usually, yes. Most electronic throttle bodies need an adaptation after fitting so the engine computer learns the new unit. Depending on the car this is done with a diagnostic tool or an ignition-on routine.
Why does my diesel have a throttle body?
On diesels it helps control EGR flow and closes at switch-off to stop the engine shuddering. It doesn't control acceleration the way a petrol throttle body does, but a fault can still cause limp mode and warning lights.
Does the pin count matter?
Yes. Throttle bodies that look alike can have different plugs. Count the pins on your old unit and match the OE number before ordering.
Will cleaning fix my throttle body?
It can help if the problem is carbon build-up. It won't fix an electrical fault, a worn motor or a failed position sensor. If fault codes return after cleaning, the unit needs replacing.
