Is It Your Throttle Body?

Rough or hunting idle
Revs rise and fall, or the engine shakes at idle.

Limp mode
Power is cut, often with the spanner or engine light on.

Poor pick-up
Flat spots or slow response on the accelerator.

Shudder at switch-off
Common on TDCi diesels when the throttle valve sticks.

Petrol or Diesel? Check the Part Number

Ford part numbers tell you which type you have. Numbers with 9F991 in them are petrol throttle bodies. Numbers with 9E926 are diesel throttle valves, which mainly help the EGR system and close at switch-off to stop the engine shuddering.

Ford 2.0 TDCi (Focus, Mondeo, S-Max): two different throttle valves were fitted (6G9Q9E926AE and 3M5Q9E926AB / 0345C4). Check the number on your old unit before ordering.

How to Choose

Find the part number on the label of your old throttle body and match it to the tables above or the product listing.
Count the pins in the plug (3, 5 or 6). The new throttle body must fit your wiring.
Confirm the engine: size, petrol or TDCi diesel, and year. The same model often uses several different throttle bodies.

After fitting: clear any stored fault codes and let the engine relearn the new unit. On many Ford petrol engines this is an ignition-on and idle routine. On Transit and Ranger 2.2 TDCi models the engine computer must be trained with a diagnostic tool. Without a relearn you may get a high or unstable idle. How do I tell if mine is a petrol or diesel throttle body?

Look at the Ford part number. Petrol units have 9F991 in the number, for example 2S6U9F991FA. Diesel throttle valves have 9E926, for example 6G9Q9E926AE or BK2Q9E926AB.

Which throttle body fits a Transit or Transit Custom 2.2 TDCi?

Most 2011-on Transit Mk7 and Mk8, Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom 2.2 TDCi models use BK2Q9E926AB, the same unit as the Ranger 2.2 and 3.2 TDCi. Check the number on your old unit to be sure.

Will a Ford throttle body fit my Volvo, Peugeot or Citroën?

Often, yes. Ford shared engines with Volvo, Peugeot, Citroën and Land Rover, so the same throttle body is used across them. If the part number on your old unit matches, it will fit.

My TDCi shudders when I switch it off. Is it the throttle valve?

It can be. On TDCi engines the throttle valve closes at switch-off to stop the engine shaking. If it's sticking or has failed, you may feel a shudder and see a throttle or EGR fault code.
