Types of Power Steering Pipes & Hoses
Signs of a Leaking Steering Pipe or Hose
- Power steering fluid level keeps dropping, or there are red, brown or clear oily drips under the front of the vehicle.
- Wet, oily or swollen hose, especially at the crimped ends, or rusty, flaking metal pipes.
- Whining or groaning from the pump when turning, caused by low fluid or air in the system.
- Heavy or uneven steering, especially at low speed or when parking.
- Burning smell if fluid drips onto the exhaust.
Act quickly. Running the pump with low fluid can damage the power steering pump, which is a much more expensive repair.

How to Choose the Right Steering Pipe
- Find the OE number on the old pipe's label or crimp ferrule, and compare it with the OE numbers on our product pages.
- Feed or return? Check which pipe is leaking: the high-pressure line from the pump, or the low-pressure line back to the reservoir.
- Check engine and drive type. On vans like the Transit, FWD and RWD versions use different pipes.
- Still unsure? Send our team your registration or VIN and we will check it for you, free of charge.

Steering Pipe & Hose FAQs
Can I drive with a leaking power steering hose?
Only for a very short distance, and only with the fluid topped up. A leaking hose can fail suddenly and make the steering very heavy. Fluid on a hot exhaust is also a fire risk. Replace it as soon as possible.
Can a power steering hose be repaired?
A high-pressure hose should not be repaired with clamps or tape, because it runs at very high pressure. Replace the complete hose or pipe assembly.
Should I replace the feed and return pipes together?
If one pipe has failed through age or corrosion, the other is often in similar condition. Replacing both at once saves a second job and a second fluid bleed.
Which power steering fluid should I use?
Use the type in your vehicle handbook or printed on the reservoir cap. Different vehicles use different fluids, and mixing them can damage seals.
Why is my power steering pump whining after fitting a new hose?
Usually there is still air in the system or the fluid level is low. Top up and bleed the system again. If the noise continues, check the pump itself.
